Two students of FEB UGM, Phelia Myrna (Economics 2016) and Astrid Nasanti Putrilindya (Accounting 2014), won 1st and 2nd place in National Essay Competition (NEC). The competition is organized by the English Student Association (ESA) Fakultas Keguruan dan Ilmu Pendidikan (FKIP) Sebelas Maret University, Surakarta.
The National Essay Competition (NEC) is part of The Magnificent ESA’s Fair 2017 annual events. This event consisted of several other events such as debate competitions, storytelling competitions and seminars. This year NEC had a grand theme "Promoting Digital Literacy for 21’st Quality Learning.”
To participate in this competition, each participant is required to create an essay individually reviewing one of the six subtopics that consist of three aspects of digital literacy: education, law, and socio-culture. Then, the participants are selected to be the top 10 to be invited to UNS and proceed to the final round.
In the final round, each finalist makes an essay spontaneously with the theme chosen by the judges. Related to the theme of the contest, the theme chosen in the final round was "Critical Thinking to Avoid Fake Information." The participants should also be able to present it in front of the jury with guidance on the questions given. Based on the presentation, Phelia won first place with essay "Hoax: An Offline Battle for the Nation" and Astrid won 2nd place with essay "Professional Sceptism: Critical Thinking to Avoid Fake Information".
