Banoo, an IoT-based aquaculture technology innovation made by Indonesian students, had just won the People’s Choice Award Winner at 2019 Cisco Global Problem Solver Challenge. Three students and two alumni of Universitas Gadjah Mada included in this team are Azellia Alma Shafira (Management 2016), Katya Dara Ozzilenda Soegiharto, Ryan Wiratama Bhaskara (Mechanical Engineering 2014), Muhammad Adlan Hawari (Electronics and Intrumentation 2015), and Fakhrudin Hary Santoso (Fisheries 2015). In the international competition held by Cisco Systems Inc., Banoo won against thousands of innovators from all over the world, being the only winner from Southeast Asia and received funding of US$ 10,000.
Under the guidance of Dr. Deendarlianto, Dr. Wiratni Budhijanto, Prof. Rustadi, and Nofie Iman Vidya Kemal, Ph.D, Banoo team developed a technology-based innovation to empower fish farmers in Indonesia, especially in remote areas and realize Sustainable Development Goals (SGDs). The team sees the condition of pond fisheries in Indonesia which has not been maximized despite their enormous potential due to the quality of traditional and uncompetitive fish farming. Therefore, this team has a mission to build a more efficient and inclusive pond fisheries ecosystem with technological assistance to advance the economy and the welfare of the Indonesian people.
Banoo uses a microbubble generator to improve pond water quality with the help of Internet-of-Things (IoT), a sensor to automatically turn on the generator. In addition, Banoo uses renewable energy sources, namely solar panels so Banoo can be used throughout Indonesia, even in areas that do not have access to electricity. With Banoo, fish farmers can independently obtain sustainable sources of food and livelihoods.
The development of Banoo innovation has been fully supported by Gadjah Mada University, Ministry of Research, Technology and Higher Education (Kemenristekdikti), Pertamina (Persero), and PT Mino Teknologi Indonesia. In accordance with its slogan, "Invest in Water, Relieve Hunger", Banoo invites all levels of Indonesian society to participate in realizing an Indonesian society that has food sovereignty.
