The Faculty of Economics and Business at Universitas Gadjah Mada (FEB UGM) has again demonstrated its strong commitment to developing accounting education in Indonesia, particularly in the eastern regions. FEB UGM realized this commitment by organizing Intensive Training in Accounting, Institutional Finance, and Computerized Accounting for 24 students from the Accounting Department at SMK Negeri 1 Teluk Bintuni, West Papua.

The training was conducted in collaboration with the Center for Accounting Education Studies (PKAP), the Center for Information Systems Studies (PKSI), the Professional Accountant Education Program at FEB UGM, and the Department of Education, Culture, Youth, and Sports of Teluk Bintuni Regency. Held from July 15 to August 31, 2024, at FEB UGM, the training was attended by 24 students who are indigenous Papuans (OAP). These participants were selected through an affirmative program for OAP students from vocational schools in Teluk Bintuni Regency. The training aims to equip students with relevant accounting skills in the digital era and prepare them for the workforce or further education at the university level.

The Head of the Department of Education of Teluk Bintuni Regency, Drs. Albertus Anofa, highlighted the training as part of the internship and practical experience program for 11th-grade students moving to the 12th grade. "This is the first time such training and internship activities have been held. We hope it will enhance the knowledge of our students. We hope that the skills they acquire will be useful in our region after they graduate," he explained.

The Vice Dean for Research, Community Service, Collaboration, and Alumni at FEB UGM, Gumilang Aryo Sahadewo, S.E., M.A., Ph.D., in his speech, expressed the hope that this training would inspire students to continue their education at the university level, particularly at FEB UGM.

The training will be conducted over seven weeks, consisting of two weeks of Financial Accounting Training, two weeks of Institutional Finance Training, and three weeks of Digital Accounting Training and Teaching Factory, which includes hands-on practice with SMEs. Each week, the learning activities will take place five days a week, using a tutorial and accounting practicum model and the SIDEK-Edu and SIDEK-ERP applications developed by the Accounting Laboratory at FEB UGM. Five sessions per day, each lasting 45 minutes, in line with the standard school lesson hours. The total number of sessions in this program is 75 tutorial sessions and 50 practicum sessions.

One of the participants, Roni Yosep Mukuan, expressed his enthusiasm for the training. He hopes to gain new insights and knowledge through this program. "I feel very fortunate to receive training directly from one of the most prestigious universities in Indonesia. I will take in as much knowledge as possible for my future life," he said.

This intensive training is part of FEB UGM's efforts to promote sustainable development in the education sector, particularly in supporting education in Papua. This initiative will serve as a role model for other educational institutions to actively participate in developing education in remote areas of Indonesia, especially in Papua. The program aims to produce more skilled and knowledgeable young Papuan generations who can significantly contribute to regional and national development. Thus, such activities can have long-term benefits in improving community welfare and regional advancement.

The training also represents FEB UGM's tangible commitment to supporting the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). FEB UGM is committed to ensuring inclusive quality education (SDG 4) and promoting lifelong learning opportunities, especially for Indonesian society. Through training for indigenous Papuan students (OAP), the intensive accounting training contributes to reducing social inequalities within and among countries (SDG 10), particularly in addressing educational disparities in Indonesia's eastern regions, which often face challenges in accessing quality education.

In the long term, intensive accounting training is expected to be a starting point for promoting inclusive and sustainable economic growth (SDG 8) and decent work for all by preparing students with relevant skills in the digital era. The intensive accounting training conducted by FEB UGM aims not only to strengthen individual capacities but also to contribute to sustainable development at local and national levels, in line with the vision of the Faculty of Economics and Business at Universitas Gadjah Mada and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
